Gilbert is shorter and stockier than your average kalus. He stands only 5'4" high and weighs 175lbs, not all of it muscle. However he isn't overweight, just extra dense in his bones and a bit heavier than he ought to be. And his body shows a lot of physical wear, to the point that he looks more ragged than he does rugged. His tail is missing the tip on his right side, his left ear was slit about midway up its bottom edge, and the eye patch over his right eye covers an empty socket. On the other hand his horns are intact, and look much like a
Bison's horns. Gilbert even has all his teeth and claws.
His coloring fades from a light blue at his hands, feet, ear tips, tail tip, and horns to a dark charcoal gray on the rest of his body. A great deal of scarring has lightened both the blue and gray hue of his skin, as just about every square foot has at least one scar. His eyes are a similar blue with the usual elliptical shape to the pupil. Gilbert's hair is white and has a blue shimmer.
As said, the years of working in the Steel Thorns has taken its toll. In a fight Gil's left leg was crushed and couldn't be set properly, so it healed about half an inch shorter than his right leg. Even the healers couldn't do much because it had already set and he wouldn't permit them to break it. A custom pair of boots even out his gait, though Gil still walks with a minor limp.
Gilbert no longer wears his old uniform, but keeps to the clothing of the lower class that he was born to. In spite of his pension the clothes are old and faded, the pants being more toward a fawn-brown and his long-sleeved shirt being more of a dirty cream. Even the Steel Thorn is kept in his pack, rather than overtly worn.

Small concealed crossbow with four steel bolts. Due to an ingenious collapsing mechanism, this crossbow can be concealed within a person's sleeves by use of a special gauntlet. A small levered ratchet is built in to draw the bow, which is approximately 60lbs draw weight, and the bolts can be stored under his hand. With a clever itching motion to the arm a bolt will fall, fletching first, into a waiting palm. The crossbow is accurate to 30 yards.

Gilbert was known as one of the most dangerous of the Emperor's bodyguards, and his infamy reached to even Sharzak. It wasn't without due reason that he was nicknamed "Guts." His retirement was quiet and
very recent. No one knows the exact reason why he retired except the Emperor-Regent and a few comrades. Rumor says it has to do with the family that Gil had. It is known that he had a family, but not what happened to them. And those who do know aren't saying. Another rumor is that he killed the Emperor himself, or was involved in the abduction of the prince.
